The history of UFAB
From shipyard roots to global industry – UFAB has delivered industrial performance for over 50 years through engineering excellence and precision manufacturing.

How it all began
The story of UFAB begins with entrepreneur Gustaf Mattsson. Growing up in Lödöse, he started working at the local shipyard at just 15. After engineering studies and experience at Eriksbergs Mekaniska Verkstad, he moved to Uddevalla to join Gustaf B. Thordén at Uddevallavarvet, where his skill as an optical drafter led him to head the design office.
In 1961, Gustaf founded his own design bureau – the seed that would later grow into Mattssongruppen. UFAB was established in 1968, following the closure of LM Ericsson in Uddevalla, and quickly expanded with customers across industries such as offshore, medtech, aerospace, agriculture, wind power, and energy.
The 2000s brought new steps: a dedicated design department, the launch of UFAB Shanghai in 2010 to strengthen global competitiveness, and in 2013 a merger with Junoverken that reinforced capacity and brand. Today, UFAB is a modern industrial partner – combining Swedish engineering and global resources with a clear focus on quality, efficiency, and customer value.
